Post Can you have OSA without being tired
I was told I have OSA right before thanksgiving, I was tested at my mothers request because I was always tired.  My mom has OSA and 2 of her brothers, it seems it runs in the family, possibly a small neck or something.  Anyway on Christmas night I was lisening to my sister while she slept, because I was holding her baby trying to get him to sleep, and I really think she stopped breathing.  The reason that suprised me was because she is never tired in the morning after 8 hours of sleep and is not tired during the day.  Is it possible that she could have OSA and not be tired?  I made he make an appoitment for the tes (Jan 17).  I am just wondering what you all thought..  Thanks

Fred,

Does she have any other symtoms?  Does she have headaches in the morning?  Check out other symtoms in the FAQ section of this forum.  It is possible that she has a genetic predisposition to apnea and for some reason it is just beginning to occur, perhaps because she has gained weight during pregnancy, changed meds., etc.  If you are sure she stopped breathing, it would be prudent for her to have a sleep study.  There is nothing wrong with getting diagnosed and treated at the beginning stages, before it wrecks ones' life!  And if she doesn't have it, no harm done!

Let us know how this turns out!

Vicki

I was diagnosed with OSA 5 years ago.  I had NO symptoms other than snoring.  Before I retired I held executive level positions at large public companies and had no problem working effectively 12 to 14 hours a day.  Did a lot of travel and jet lag was never a big problem for me.  I went to see an ENT for a consult regarding somnoplasty to cure my snoring and he ordered the sleep test.  My wife always said I stopped breathing during the night but I just thought it was a normal snoring pattern.

So the short answer to your question is, YES.  One can have OSA without the classic set of symptoms.

Hi PhotoFred,

Vicki and grampy gave you great info.  My sister was diagnosed with OSA years ago.  She was never tired, just had headaches.  And, of course, snoring.  Now I believe I've had OSA for many years, all the way back to my early twenties.  I was just diagnosed in June and I'm in my mid-30's.  I did end up with major exhaustion, however, that didn't occur until this last January.  In my case, it took a long time before the most dibilitating symptom occurred.

thank you all for the input.  My sister does have the study scheduled Jan 17th.  She called today to add her name to a waitlist incase something opens earlier.

welcome EELAI..  yes OSA stands for obstructive sleep apena.  There are 3 kinds of sleep Apena, the other two are Central and that is when you brain tells your body to stop brething and the last is when you have a combo of the two.
