Still Tired With the CPAP

Post Still Tired With the CPAP
I've been using the CPAP machine for 6 weeks now. Got the right mask, was retitrated--they got it right thr first time.  I feel almost like I sleet too much. ( I can't seem to sleep more than 6 hrs., anyway) By midday, I feel very heavy and loggy--like I just want to remain motionless in a chair or bed. My BP & pulse rates are super so it seems that i did accomplish something through the night. I'm dreaming, too. What gives? Do I need to give it more time? I'm very frustrated and need to resolve this. I have three little kids and a wife who are waiting for the "old me" to return.

6 hours may not be enough sleep. Most of us need at least 7 or 8.  Sometimes when we start cpap, we have diffuculty staying asleep as long as we should be.  Our bodies and brains are so used to interupted sleep, they don't know what to do with themselves , so we have to retrain ourselves to sleep longer.  When you wake up , get out of bed, go potty, walk around for a minute or so, then go back to bed and put the mask on.  Lay there for a while and just enjoy the morning and the good air. If you go back to sleep, great, if not, then get up after a half hour or so.  Your sleeping time should improve, and you'll have more energy during the day.  Virginia

After 6 weeks of compliant use you should notice a difference. EDS by midday is not good.
The fact that you have been retitrated kinda knocks that avenue out.

Sleepiness points to (not always) a lack of Stages 3 & 4 of Non REM Sleep. Dreams indicate that you achieve REM Sleep, but it is said that to 'remember a dream, you must waken during it'. Has your sleep doctor mentioned anything about sleep architecture ? It could be that your architecture is still fragmented. You might mention this to him/her (over the phone). Also, was your sleep architecture monitored during the retitration ? How did it compare to your initial sleep study ?

Answers to these questions might bring about a reason and/or a solution.

Please post back.

Daniel.

I'm no expert, but if you're still going through REM-rebound you'll definately still feel tired during the day.

Post REM Rebound
Would I still be experiencing REM rebound after 6 weeks? To be fair, it hasn't been 6 weeks of good sleeps but they are improving--and the dreaming is increasing. This new period of sleeping is different from all the rest in my 50+ years that it's hard to tell just what I'm experiencing and if that's the direction in which I should be going. Thanks for all your replies! As you probably know,  It's an unsettling new world .[/i]
