Post newly diagnosed..
I had a sleep study in oct and the results are as follows:
total sleep time of 337 our of 400 mins
sleep eff. of 84.3% c 3 REM  letency of 100.5 mins
sleep architechure of 3.1% stge1, 53.3% stage 2, 13% stage 3, 12% stage 4 and 18.5% REM
I had a respiratory disturbance index of 9.6 evnets pr hr but that increased to 25 an hr in REM
1 central apnea and 53 hypopneas the longest was 68.8 seconds desat didnt fall below 93% and only mild intermittent snoring
152 arousals with an index of 27/hr = 99 were spontaneous17.6/hr  and 53 were due to respiratory issues  (index of 9.4/hr)  and 1 periodic limb movement.

My dr said it was only mild but i now am suffering from severe daytime sleepiness and palpitations. I am scheduled to have another sleep study with CPCP  in dec.
my concern is the central sleep apnea... could this get worse? I had a head trauma (horse crushed me onto a concrete floor) 2 years ago and since then have been developing these problems!!
sorry for the long post im just confused and scared.
thanks for any info you can give.

Marylou,

Everyone can have a central every once in a while, as we get older it becomes more common. Only having 1 for the entire night does not mean that you have central sleep apnea.  If you had them all night, that would be a completely different story.  One of the things that has been noted is that the symptoms from OSA do not relate directly to the severity.  I was at a lecture earlier this year, and Dr. David Rappoport spoke.  He has a relative that tested as severe but was not symptomatic, 10 years later he was, and he still tested the same.  Make sure that you get the titration study done (that is the study that they figure out what pressure of CPAP will take care of your apnea)  and if you aren't comfortable with the mask, tell them!  The mask IMHO is the most important part to making therapy work.

thanks Mike, I appreciate the info.
i understand this might be a controllable thing with the CPAP, I hope I finally get some sleep! God am I tired!  the last 4 months have been really hard.

forgot to mention I'm only 43 years old and only started having these symptons since  my accident. worsening over the last 8 months.  I always sleep like a log and had plenty of energy. Now I feel like I'm 90 yrs old! this really stinks. I fall asleep at a drop of a hat when i'm not constantly moving.
sorry for the rant, i'm just frustrated. I have to have a complete cardiac workup and neurology workup before they start any meds.
thanks for listening.
