 Got My Machine!
Hello Everyone,
Well, I got my CPAP yesterday---FINALLY! I ended up with the ResMed S8 Elite with C-FLEX and heated humidifier, and the Swift nasal pillows. My first night went very well, I slept with the pillows on the whole night except one bathroom break, but I woke up several times for other unknown reasons. I remember once I felt wetness under the pillows on my upper lip, and the air felt cold. I had the humidifier set on 3 at first, then raised it to 4. But I woke up BEFORE the alarm went off at 5:30 and I haven't been sleepy ALL DAY!!! I think I'm in love!! .I hope night 2 goes as well!! One question, though- For some reason the air never seemed to get warm and the water level in the humidifier chamber was the same as when I filled it before going to sleep. I used the warming feature and the ramp set at 4cm x 20 minutes. Any thoughts anyone?

Sandy, it's good to hear that your first night went so well!
I have no idea on the humidifier -- could you tell if it was warm this morning when you turned it off? How cold is the air in your bedroom (maybe the air is cooling before it gets to you?). As for the water level, I use a heated humidifier and I really don't use much water at all -- I usually set it on 2 or 2.5, and I use less than 140ml (4.6oz) a night. It takes a while to get an idea for the amount of water -- I used to fill mine to the max but ended up throwing most of it away in the morning.
Good luck, and I can't wait to hear how your second night goes!

Sandy, that's wonderful!
I bet things continue to go great for you.
I'm guessing your water chamber is removable? Is there a plate below it that might be warm (how it's heated).
My water seems to go down quite a bit, depending on the level of heated humidity. I might refill it every other night, depending.
Be sure not to fill past the level indicator, maybe keep the water level a little lower.
Some people experience "rain out" of water due to condensation when the warmer moist air meets cooler air inside the hose.
That may or may not cause the water droplets. I don't have that problem, so I'm no expert.
Also, much of my hose usually ends up under the covers with me, so it's being kept warm.
Some people buy a heated hose made in Australia, which can be ordered.
Some improvise some covering for the hose, either make something or take old socks with the ends cut out of them, and fitted to cover the hose.
Keep us posted on how things go!

Water use is going to depend on the humidity in your house. In my house when it is high 60-70% I don't see any use when it is lower then I see water disappearing.

Hi All!
Well, 2nd night went almost as well. Had 1 bathroom break again, no rainout, but still woke several times. I felt some nasal stuffiness last night before bed and this morning my nose was full and I'm sneezing and right eye watering and headachey (is that a word?) Maybe I'm catching something or may be allergies.
I keep the hose under the covers with me most of the time, so it stays warm, and I haven't noticed any condensation in the hose either time.
Skitter: (I'm in Dallas too!) No the water didn't feel warm. My house is pretty warm with low humidity.
Linda and Dave: The water chamber is removable and there is a plate underneath but I didn't check it. yesterday. I only filled the chamber about halfway at my RT's suggestion. The water level was lower this morning when I checked, though. Does the setting on the humidifier (1-6) determine the temperature it heats to, the amount of moisture, or both? I have it on 4. Unfortunately, the manual only says to clean the connector plug, which I did.

Sandy, I'm wondering if maybe your humidifier isn't heating up? Mine has a separate power cord (from the CPAP machine), and a light to indicate that the humidifier is on. Does yours have this?

No separate power cord. It's integrated to plug directly into the cpap machine. I'm going to really play around with it this weekend to see if I can figure it out-if not my DME will get a call on Monday.
Thanks everyone!

Barbccrn,
I got the S8 Elite. They're probably very similar, except I have c-flex. I really like that feature because it feels more natural when you exhale. I moved up from 3 to 4 on the 2nd night also. I may try 5 tonight. I think we newbies may be OK becuse of help and support from the wonderful people on this forum!! Good luck tonight!!

I have the S8 and keep the humidifier setting at between 4 &5, that's most comfortable for me. However, being in Illinois, where it is quickly getting colder, I may have to crank it all the way to 5 or higher, since the humidity in my room is only 35% at the most. I just got an Air-Swiss Air Washer, which is a great little humidifier that cleanses the air as well as humidifies. It gets the humidity up to about 50% at night, and I'm comfortable (for now) with that. Good luck to all!

Try wrapping a blanket around your cpap. This helped mine the air seemed to be warmer after I did this. I had to turn off my humidifier cause it was to wet for me it all depends on the time of year with the seasons.

Well, Eric, help is here, so stay tuned. Do you have a separate doctor who is a sleep specialist? If so, you should listen to him/her and not your family doctor. It takes about two weeks, average, to get used to a CPAP machine and sleeping in a mask all night, so don't give up -- hang in there. Believe me, once you get used to it, you won't know you have it on and you'll feel a lot more rested during the day. But the main doctor you need to listen to is your sleep specialist, always. If you have problems with your mask -- uncomfortable, leaking, etc. -- let your sleep specialist know about it. There are many different masks available and you can find another one more suitable for you.
