my doctor is going to do a pre and post pulmonary function test but i have not read where this is a test for sleep apnea.i have done the night time test in which it took three nights to get a hour and 45 minute result.my question is what is this test and is it common for people seeking a sleep apnea diagnosis.thanks.

Hi Bryan,

I'm not sure what the "pre and post" part is, but I had that test.  I had it after my sleep study also.
My oxygen level had been very low.  That and with some other concerns, the doctor just wanted this test done in case it revealed any other problems that might need to be addressed.  I remember having to breath strongly into a tube, which exhausted me!

I view this as a precautionary test, and it is wise that your doctor ordered it.  It can only help you and make sure you are on the right course of treatments for all the symptoms or pulmonary problems you might have.

If you ever smoked, they might be testing for emphysema.  My oxygen level zoomed to below 70% when I was in REM sleep during my first sleep study.  My pulmonary specialist said that one of the reasons they would happen could be that emphysema has damaged my diaphragm.  I quit smoking in 1994 and it could still reach out and bite me.
