Power failed late last night for 4 hours...
while I was asleep with my CPAP on. Luckily I have a Back up power supply (UPS) on my PC and one for my CPAP.
They started beeping at 1145 pm which alerted me and I woke up...in my groggy deep sleep state I had no idea what the beeping was.
I removed my comfortgel mask by breaking one of the clips (damn) and leaving the CPAP on and howling (on UPS power) while I hunted down the beeping of the other UPS.
Deep sleep confusion...ahhh such is my life. At least I'm sleeping great with the CPAP on.
Good news is I have a spare mask and my DME provides a new one every 3 months, which is just around the corner for me.
I recommend a PC or similar UPS for your CPAP. If I didn't have it, I shudder to think what could have happened.
Cheers,
Steve

That's exactly the one I use for mine also, and it'll run my CPAP for hours if needed, I've tested it before. I've always had a fear of losing power and not being able to breathe and the battery backup cured that issue for me right away. I recommend them to everyone using a CPAP actually.

How long is the Life of those batteries? 1 Year?
I'm wondering what would happen during a Black out? Would we suffocate to death if we use a Full Face Mask?

More than likely, you would have just woken up and removed your mask.
Not to discount the UPS, but the fear that one will die during a power outage is unfounded. If you have a nasal mask and the air stops, your instinct will be to open your mouth. Full face masks have anti-asphyxiation valves which allow you to breath room air if the air flow stops.
Still, if you are prone to power glitches/surges in your area I would opt for the better models that filter & regulate the power as well. Power issues/surges are a sure machine killer.

Yes, but my chin strap would fight me doing that, so you never know.
My UPS has a nice feature where it beeps loudly when the power is off. A real nice alert feature for me when I'm sleeping, it also provides power for my CPAP for a short period of time while I wake up to the beeping.
Well worth the $49 it cost. They last about three years or so.

Wouldn't you rather sleep right though the power outage? I mean... have no beeping and enough backup power to last at least 8 hours?

I have to replace my batteries about every four years, in fact I just replaced one last week that I bought late in 2003 .. it cost $36.00 to replace, they ship you the replacement battery and include a free shipping label to return your old battery back.
Masks are designed with a small vent, you won't smother if the power goes out, it'll wake you up, but still I'd just as soon not have the interruption. I don't use a full face mask, I'm claustrophobic and the Comfort Gel is rough enough for me to wear, though I will be going to a full face mask next time, I want to try the Hybrid.

I asked my daughter to get me a battery back up for my birthday next month. She said, "Mom, that has got to be the most boring birthday present ever, but if that's what you want." Not boring to me, I like to sleep, and we are visiting my Dad in N.O. the week after my birthday, and they are prone to power outages. I have a resmed elite, will that one work for my unit? And where do I send her to buy it? Virginia

My CPAP runs perfectly fine during power outages, I just sleep through them. I have my CPAP connected to a lithium ion CPAP battery, which will last nearly two nights. For long outages my RV battery will last at least a week.

Luckily I've never been claustrophobioc since wearing a mask was what I did for the past 20+ years.
I'll look into a dedicated CPAP back up as everyone recommends it.

Virginia, my lithium ion CPAP battery is a BG-C222 from Battery Geek. It is avalable from several online stores, use a shopping bot to find the best price. It is essentially a portable cigarette lighter outlet and comes with a cable and adapters to fit CPAPs. Your CPAP has to have a 12 volt power input jack and it is not meant to power a heated humidifier.

As for UPS units, practically any store that sells computers will have them.
CompUSA, Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

So I would need to run the machine without the humidifier if the power goes out? Probably not a big deal, especially in the swamps where I am going to. If the powers out, the A.C. will be out also, so I won't need the humidifier. We haven't had a power outage here for more than a few seconds for at least 8 years, so I'm not too concerned about having a backup at home. Virginia

Wow that's impressive, and expensive as heck at the $449.00 price I found on the net. Will your insurance cover any of that or is it considered and accessory you have to buy yourself? I found it $100 cheaper somewhere else.. still that's a lot.
