Post pediatric sleep study
I'm not sure if I can post this here or not...I'd already posted on the pediatric forum before noticing this one.  ??  My son (4) just got the results of his sleep study and I'm trying to figure out what they mean.

Sleep time in stages:
(n1) 2.8%  (n2) 36.8%  (n3) 42.5%  (r) 17.9%

Abnormal Respiratory Events:
Total abnormal respiratory events...287
apnea/hypopnea index...10.7/hr
respiratory disturbance index...35.3/hr
mean duration of apnea/hypopneas...8.4 seconds
longest obstructive event...31.6 seconds
overall mean oxygen saturation...93.5
lowest oxygen saturation during obstructive events...85.0

Types of Abnormal Respiratory Events:
Obstructive apneas...6 (2.1%)
Obstructive hypopneas...26 (9.1%)
respiratory effort arousals...200 (69.7%)
central apneas...55 (19.2%)
mixed apneas...0

He has an extensive medical history with multiple surgeries, low tone, connective tissue disorder, gerd, tonsils & adenoids removed....  Pretty medically complex but fairly high functioning.  I can't find anything that can help me to interpret these results.  Are they normal, low, high??  It did represent a typical night of sleep for him...if anything, he slept better during the study than at home and didn't wake due to unfamiliar surroundings.  He has another sleep study scheduled with a c-pap machine.  Hopefully that will help.

The other funny thing about him is that he has obvious trouble with apnea when he's asleep in his car seat (oxygen saturation was at 93% 10 minutes after waking up from the car).  He sounds like he's trying to breathe through a collapsed straw (if that makes any sense).  His carseat is for special needs and gives him good support so he's not flopping forward or backwards.  At night he sleeps at a 30 degree angle because of reflux/aspiration so he may have more issues if he's flat on his back...??
