I have been reading about sleep apnea and think that my husband may have it. He frequently stops breathing during the night, sort of like he is holding his breathe for a long time. What kind of doctor should he see? Who would be able to do the tests in order to diagonize whether my husband has sleep apnea?

Hi Shoba,

You need a sleep doctor. Usually they have a respiratory/pulmonory background with an additional qualification in sleep medicine. In some cases they are neurologists.

Normal circumstances demand that you are referred to them by a GP or primary care physician.

The sleep test (polysomnogram) is usually ordered by the sleep doctor, but in some cases the GP may order it with the results going to the sleep doc.
