My son had his tonsils and adenoids out on Oct 17th. He did fine during the surgery but he did have some issues afterwards. He was grunting pretty hard, having some high blood pressures 170's/100's and little bit of bleeding from his nose. They kept us 2 hours longer than they thought but we did get to go home instead of being admitted. The first day was hell!!!! We couldn't keep his pain under control which meant he wasn't eating or drinking. We had to force his pain medicine down which caused him to vomit then we got to start the whole process over again. He started to get dehydrated. So I called the E.N.T. and he gave him another script to go with the amoxil, lortab, and phenergan supp........ He gave him prelone. That seemed to REALLY help a lot. I guess his throat was more swollen than I realized. Well after that he seemed to be doing fine...........

This morning he hasn't wanted to play at all, he isn't really drinking much, he ate and threw up, he is just laying around like he is sick. He has run a fever since the first day, today is day 5. It still hovers around 99.5 degrees. He is on antibiotics already. He is still taking the amoxil, lortab(every 4 to 6 hours) we haven't been able to wean this one down yet, prelone, and now ibuprofen. Could he be getting sick? Do they revert back to acting sick again? Should I be worried?

Yes, Caden seemed to get worse before he got better. I was pretty suprised at how intense recovery from a T&A was. Caden was prescribed a form of vicodin (phenegran?) I think, and I gave it to him for about the first 3 days. The first day after the surgery, he was up and playing a little bit, and seemed to be doing great. By the third day....he was like a zombie....was running a slight temp....he could barely move. He vomited a couple times. I backed up off the perscription pain killer, switched to tylanol (his doctor said he could not have ibuprofen) and he perked up and didn't vomit again. The tylonol didn't take the edge off like the pain killer, but at least he wasn't a zombie. The doc did tell me a mild fever was normal. I would say the worst part of his recovery was between the 3-5 days. He ate absolutely nothing but popcicles for the first 3 days...then was able to tolerate jello and applesauce. He continued to eat a lot of popcicles (anything very cold helps with the pain.) I know for Caden, the combo of not eating on top of the pain killer making him sick to his stomach just completely wiped him out. It took about 10 days for him to get back to being himself.  

I would guess that the surgery, plus not eating, plus all the meds are just taking their toll, and you will see an improvement in a few more days, but I would call your son's doc (always better to be safe than sorry, right?) oh, and of course, push those fuids - ice water really helps.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the docs told me that somewhere between the 7-10 day the scabs will fall off, and it can become very painful again. I'm pretty sure Caden experienced this because I had given him tylonal, but it had worn off by mid-day....all of a sudden he just grabbed his throat and really started crying-he was playing, didn't seem to be in any pain...and it just kind of hit him. By the next day he seemed to be doing much better.

 

How's he doing today? I read your reply to another post about how he's already sleeping better----that's good to hear!

He seems to be doing better today. This is the start of day 7 so we are hanging in there. He still has a fever so I am hoping that will disappear in the next day or two. He is still requiring pain meds around the clock but he has been playing more and he is eating again. It just seems to me he is having a harder time with this than most kids his age. He just turned 3. Hopefully he will turn the corner soon because I have to go back to work on Monday.
