 Congestion and the CPAP?!?
I currently have a cold and cannot breathe out of my nostrils. I have tried using so flonase, but I can't get it to break. I tried heating up the humidifier early last night but that didn't help, I had to rip the mask off to breathe.

Hi,
I had the same thing happen last weekend and nothing worked. I called my dk and he told me just do the best I can with it.
Neddless to say I went 3 nights without my cpap and suffered for it.
If you or anyone else has some ideas please let me know for next time.
I even tried vicks in the water and that did no good either.

I keep a FF mask (full face mask - covers nose and mouth) stashed away for such nights. Mine is a ResMed Ultra Mirage FF. Lets me breathe through my mouth and still get treatment when nose is too congested to get air through it.

hi,
i use flonase daily but when i get a cold or bad allergies i use nasal decongestant spray (otrivin, drixoral) 10-15 min. before i go to sleep. once my nose is clear i can use my cpap all night without congestion (with comfort gel nasal mask). be aware not to use decongestant nasal spray for more than 5 days in a row or you ll end up with rebound congestion. i find that rinsing my sinuses with salted water helps. see link for nasal rinse

flonase works slowly and needs to be used daily for maximum effect it can take up to 2-3 weeks to get the full effect. I have an auto cpap and noticed that the pressure i used when congested it higher than usual, which probably helps to keep my nose decongested.
good luck

Search for my "Sinus Irrigation How To" post in this forum. It is great for allergy sufferers and people who have colds. Flonase must be used consistently and will only work for allergies. As posted for colds, in addition to sinus irrigation, use the standard over the counter cold remedies and decongestants.

Even these need to be checked for conflicts with any other medications you may be taking.

Vicki, thanks for the suggestion, but that sounds like I might have a tough time doing that. I really could use it though. Are there any side effects or anything? Why do you use the Karo syrup?

Hey SleepyGolf,
Read through the whole post so that you can see what I actually do, I don't bother with the Karo, I'll call Scripps and ask why it is in there. I've seen it in other sinus irrigation recipes also. It is probably soothing, helps moisterize and inhibits bacterial growth, but I'll check.
The whole point of this is that it is easy! A little salt and water, much cheaper than buying saline sprays which do exactly the same thing at a much higher cost (plus you get to use warm water, ahhh!). As noted in the post, you can buy a simple bulb to use, or as I've done many times while vacationing, just snort it out of a cup! You just have to make sure the salinity is correct (hence the recipe) or else you are in for a big surprise. But read the whole post again for details and shortcuts.
The only side effect is that your nose feels great and you can breath through it.

Thanks Vicki, I should have read it more thorough. I am going to the pharmacy to pick up the ear syringe. I was unable to sleep with my CPAP the last two nights, and right now I feel like !@#!.

Well I was able to do the sinus irrigation successfully thanks to Vicki. I feel so much better now that I can breathe. I will most likely do it again before I go to bed to insure a good CPAP night.
