Post Getting Tonsils out
Specifically worded question:  How many people (if any) have had their apnea improved by getting their tonsils out?  I don't mean on this board, but in general.

Hi Guest!
Hmmm, I don't have the answer to that one.  The stat we generally use is surgery improves OSA about 50% (AHI drops by half), 50% of the time.
The surgeries are so varied (even in tonsillectomy that do other stuff, like take adenoids too) and individuals are even more variable so the best thing to do is go see the ENT guy, have him take a look down there, and he can tell you the chances of success.
Good luck.

When my son had his tonsils out and turbinate reduction, his AHI was reduced from 38/hr to 10/hr
He had both surgeries performed the same day, so I can't say which to credit for how much improvement.
However, the pressure required to relieve his apnea was unchanged requiring 10cmh2o  at both pre and post-op sleep studies.
He was in his mid-twenties, and of average weight.
