Post My Sleep Study Results! help?
Can someone help me decipher this info? i know you are all probably sick of reading these posts. My doctor has a really really thick brazilian accent and i caught some of what he said but not all.

Total sleep :489.5 minutes
sleep efficency: 95%
latency to sleep onset : 15 minutes
latency to REM: 154 minutes

sleep stage percentages
wake: 2.1%
stage 1: 3.6%
stage 2: 81.7%
stage 3/4: 0/0% (?????)
REM: 12.6%
arousals and awakenings 46.2 per hour

respiratory: 165 events consisting of 160 obstructive, 0 mixed and 5 central.
AHI was 37.04
arousal index associated w/ resp. events and events w/ less than 4% desaturations (RERA's) 31.13

during REM AHI was 29.52
avg O2 desaturations was 95% and minimum SA02 during desaturation event was 85%. body position most common during respiratory events was back.

i'm going for my 2nd sleep study tomorrow night to be fitted for a CPAP and am going to be eating better to lose weight. i have always been sleepy tho, since i was a kid, always getting in trouble for falling asleep in elementary and high school and college. i was hoping maybe a sleep study would give me some insight. i also have history of sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucinations but they did a nap study too and showed no other symptoms of narcalepsy.

thanks for any insight u may have :)

You slept for 489 minutes and were asleep 95% of the time, I think. d'oh!

It took you 15 minutes to fall asleep and 154 minutes to reach your first REM cycle.

The sleep stages are the percentage of sleep time spent in each stage with zero in 3 and 4 which isn't unusual while in the clinic and with all the arousals.  It will return in a few weeks after therapy starts.

You were awakened 46.2 times per hour on average.  You had 160 obstructive apneas; you stopped breathing because your throat closed off.  You had 5 central apneas which means, for some reason your brain didn't tell you to breath.  Taking all that into account, your Apnea Hyponea Index was 37.04 times per hour on average.  You stopped breathing 37 times per hour.

Most of your apneas occurred during REM; not unusual.  At some point your O2 level dropped to 85%; not great but not real scary either.  These happened on your back [supine] which is normal for all of us.  The back is always the worst position.

Losing weight, good.  Probably won't cure your apnea because it gets worse with age.  However, you may be the one, so GO for it!!

Hey Alan, while your statement is true for many people, it is not always the case.  Some folk have higher AHI on their sides than on their backs.  That's me.  Some have apneas or hypopneas that are more resistant to pressure when on their sides than when on their backs.  That's me again.  My AHI is 30+% higher if I'm on my side.  The pressure needed to resolve mine is 5 cmH2O higher when I'm on my side than what is needed if I'm on my back.

And wouldn't you know it, I'm not a back sleeper... {sigh}

Blessings,
