I also had a M series machine and the humidifier quit working one day. I was told there was a recall with that humidifier. My DME replaced my machine with a System One Machine. Without knowing where you got your machine I don't know your options, you could call Respironics. To answer your question, Yes you can use it without the humidifier with the adapter. If you do not have the adapter I don't think using the machine with the humidifier in the off position would change your therapy. This is just my opinion.
