Post voluntarily recall?

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu Foods’ Nationwide U.S. recall of Specific Canned Cat Foods.

Topeka, KS (March 21, 2007) – In response to the Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. announced on March 16 a voluntary precautionary recall in the United States of a very small number of canned cat food products that are manufactured by Menu for Hill’s. This involves less than one half of one percent of Hill’s total product line.

This voluntary recall only affects Science Diet® Savory Cuts Feline canned products sold in the United States.

Hill’s is voluntarily recalling the following feline products:
1. Science Diet® Ocean Fish Dinner in Sauce Savory Cuts® Kitten, 3 oz. and 5.5 oz.
2. Science Diet® Beef Dinner in Gravy Savory Cuts® Adult, 5.5 oz
3. Science Diet® Chicken Dinner in Gravy Savory Cuts® Adult, 5.5 oz.
4. Science Diet® Ocean Fish Dinner in Sauce Savory Cuts® Adult, 5.5 oz.
5. Science Diet® Chicken Dinner in Gravy Savory Cuts® Mature Adult 7+, 5.5 oz.

No other Hill’s Science Diet® products and no Prescription Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., is taking this precautionary step to protect the health and well being of your pets. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said that consumers of other pet food brands manufactured by Menu Foods have reported a small number of cases of cat fatalities or of cats who become ill with loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy, which are potential signs of kidney failure.
This voluntary product recall by Hill’s involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the effected products immediately. Consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in your pet. All Science Diet products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-445-5777 or visit www.HillsPet.com for details.

Hill’s is recalling the product codes listed below. Product codes can be found at the bottom of the can. Only relevant code numbers have been listed here (‘X’s indicate irrelevant numbers).

Thank you.

This is absolutely out of control. Iams, Eukanuba, and Science Diet are "supposedly"  some of the best pet foods on the market. Even available at the vet.

While at the store today, I was picking up 9-Lives dry kitten chow, canned chunky chicken and gravy, moist treats for my dog, and in the back of my mind, I couldn't help but wonder if this was safe. The store, "Market Basket", had several signs posted with the specific brands of the first recall, which was great, but Iams dry dog kibble was still on the shelf. Wet or dry, I'm not buying any brand on the list.

This is so scary. I'm not buying any brand produced by Menu, on the list or not. If they didn't see this coming, how can we be sure there's not more tainted food lurking? I am going to do some extensive research what brands Menu produces and on how to prepare food for my cats and dog myself.

I found this in my local paper unreal

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Rat poison has been found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday.

Spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden would not identify the chemical or its source beyond saying it was a rodent poison.

ABC News reported it was aminopterin that may have been on imported wheat used in the pet food. Aminopterin is used to kill rats in some countries but is not registered for that use in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The chemical, also a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses.

Officials from the agriculture department and Cornell University's Animal Health Diagnostic Center would not immediately confirm the ABC report but scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon to release laboratory findings from tests on the pet food.

The Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation was focusing on wheat gluten in the food. Wheat gluten itself would not cause kidney failure, but the common ingredient could have been contaminated by heavy metals or mold toxins, the FDA said.

State and FBI officials said they knew of no criminal investigations in the case.

The pet deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

Menu Foods is majority owned by Menu Foods Income Fund of Streetsville. The company also makes foods for zoo cats, but those products are unaffected by the recall.

The company's chief executive and president said Menu Foods delayed announcing the recall until it could confirm that the animals had eaten its product before dying. Two earlier complaints from consumers whose cats had died involved animals that lived outside or had access to a garage, which left open the possibility they had been poisoned by something other than contaminated food, he said.

Menu Foods planned a media teleconference for later Friday, a spokesman said.

A spokesman for New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said he was not aware of any criminal investigation involving the tainted food. FBI spokesman Paul Holstein in Albany said Friday he was not aware of any FBI involvement in the case.

"I don't know where we'll go from here," he said.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was posted online by Menu Foods and is available at http://tinyurl.com/2pn6mm . The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.

Boston news (ABC) at noon today said that this was, not may have been, imported from China.

"ABC News reported it was aminopterin that may have been on imported wheat used in the pet food. The chemical, also a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses."

I can't help but think of the Burlington Coat Factory unknowingly selling parkas imported from China, Thailand, and the Philippines trimmed with dog fur. What a horror story that was!

I'm not going to get all political on you, but I tried very hard not to purchase anything made in those countries and imported into the US after the dog fur discovery. Trust me, it's not easy.

Now, imports from other countries are affecting our pets' health ... very sad.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you whose cats and dogs have been affected. A lot of folks who don't have pets fail to realize that they are as much a member of the family as anyone else. My heart goes out to you.

My two cats don't eat any of the foods on the Menu Foods web site list. I heard negative things about iams several years ago, and avoided their products ever since.
