Post Sometimes you should get a second opinion.
I had my sleep study done October 2004. Results as follows Patient was studied for a total of 364 minutes which she slept for 266 minutes for a sleep efficiency diminished at 73% Sleep artchitecture was characterized by a decline in Delta sleep.  Sleep latency was 7.5 minutes, REM latency was prolonged at 293 minutes.
Stage 1-17.7%
Stage 2-66.4%
Slow Wave Sleep 3.9%
REM-13%
0 obstructive, central or mixed apneas.
26 hyponeas producing an AHI of 5.9.  These events occurred only in REM sleep.  REM index 45.2/hour vs NREM index 0.0/hr.  The patient had 39 arousals for an arousal index of 8.8/hour.  These arousals were associated with snoring or spontaneous.
Arterial oxygen desaturation to 84% was observed during supine REM sleep.  Number of desaturations: 175 Time below 88% 2.3 min.
At that time it was recommended that I do not sleep on my back and lose weight.  Fast forward to December 2006 and all the symptoms are still present and worse.  Request another sleep study this time my previous sleep study was faxed to the sleep labs pulmoligist who bypassed the sleep study straight to titration based on previous results. (This was per my request.)  Based on the fact that my blood pressure is now down and I no longer need the medication, the decreased fogginess in my brain and basic improvement overall I wish I would have done this 2 years ago.
I guess the moral of the story is even mild positional obstructive sleep apnea can effect your health and well being.

Hello pstuck,

Thank you for your post. I have seen reports of people not being treated for mild apnea or sleep-related disordered breathing - and like you -  only to have continued or worsening symptoms.

Glad that you are finally receiving treatment.

Post Not so "mild"
That's great to hear!

I'm about to get a second opinion myself, because my symptoms have worsened since my first appointment. I only had "mild" Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, so I was treated with Provigil (to treat my sleepiness), and my breathing problems were dismissed. I feel much worse now and am convinced that my sleep can be improved with titration. Mild or not, my sleep quality is very poor and my daytime alertness is abysmal. I hope that I'll have a story like yours--the second opinion offers some REAL solutions and positive results.

I wish doctors would recognize that even "mild" cases of UARS or OSA can wreak havoc on the body.

Thanks for sharing!
