 question about sleep apnea
Hi...
my son is due for his second sleep study first one was mildly abnormal.
It's seems to of gotten worse over the past couple months..where
i have counted several giant gasps before i fall asleep...but the wierd thiing
is all of a sudden for the past 2 nights he hasn't been snoring as much.
HE has a scdueled sleep study next week. I may cancel if for the rest of the
week the snoring stops. I don't want to waste are time if he's not bad.
Has this happended to anybody??? Can some nights the snoring just stop???
thanks

Hi Stacy,
My 7yo dd had her adenoids removed because they were causing Obstructive Sleep apnea. When we went back to our neuro I asked him about a follow up sleep study to confirm the apnea was gone. He said 'no snoring....no problem" He was VERY WRONG, her apnea was still present, the apnea part of her study had become worse with 8 apneas....1 central, 5 obstructive and 2 mixed (4 hypopneas).....during her first 2 studies she had only had one apnea total (but 117-200 hypopneas). Her snoring appeared to stop, but was still detectable with the machines.
Please don't make the same mistake as our neuro and assume things are better, you have the test set up....have the test and then you will know for sure what is happening. I hate to think of what would happen if I had not insisted on a recheck (her oxygen went down to 79%).
The test is not convienent, but it is worth every minute and penny spent to know that your child is breathing well at night.

hi Susanne
Thanks for the info. Actually my son had his anoeids, and tonsils out when he was 2...and he still had mild sleep apnea 2 years after the surgery. HE goes through stages when his snoring is real bad and then it goes away and comes back. I was just wondering if i should wait to do the test at his worst. Because when he originally got the sleep test done...he wasn't snoring that much i would say mildly...
the results where mildly abnormal....anyhow.... i think your right i will keep the test appoint. i heard with central apnea there usually isn't a lot of snoring.
thanks

Stacey,
Snoring can be worse or better depending on the stage of sleep that your child is in when you observe him. Kids cycle through all 5 stages of sleep several times each night, so what you see and hear is very dependent on when you observe him. Also, breathing can vary based on the position your child is in. I would say that if you EVER hear any gasps in breathing or regular snoring, than a sleep study "IS"(edit-pardon me) warranted. Also, keep in mind that a person can have OSA without necessarily being a snorer. Any type of resistance in the upper airway can cause negative symptoms. I wouldnt wait to do the test when he is "at his worst". Chances are, if you observed all night long, the averages from night are about the same, and a sleep study would detect things that cannot be noticed by observation alone.

 Melora.
Hey, this is Melora. I am 12 years old.
Sometimes i wake out out of breath like I stopped breathing for a minute. Some nights i cant get to sleep even if im realllly tired. I always wake up with a dry mouth and i get headaches alot. Im not sure if this is sleep apnea because i dont snore or snort. (Sorry, im a really bad writer).

Hi Melora, if you think you are having problems with your sleep you really should talk to your parents about it. A quick trip to the Dr could really help. Talk to them about how you are feeling and they can help detrmine if you need to get a sleep study done. Good luck!
