Can CPAP cause headaches?

Postby Guest » Wed Dec 13, 2006 12:30 pm

I was one of those people that hardly ever gets a headache. Since being on CPAP, I've noticed a pretty regular pain in my head (top). The benefits of CPAP far outweigh this slight pain, but I was wondering if there was something I can do about it. Another thought I had was that since I'm sleeping so soundly, I don't move around as much, and maybe the long term position of my head/neck is causing the daytime pains. If I crack my neck, the pain goes away for awhile. I know this all sounds kind of dumb, but I figured if anyone could help, it would be one of you. Thanks.

I was hoping to see a response to your question because I am having a similar problem. I never got headaches either. I have been on CPAP for about 3 months. Everything went fine for the first 2 months then I started getting dull headaches at the temples, behind the eyes and at times on the top of the head. Whats strange is it sems to move & they are not severe ?? I am using a humidifier set at 2 and the pressure on the machine is set at 15. I noticed that my sinus problems seemed to get progressively worse over the time I was using the machine and the headaches showed up about 3 weeks ago. I went to the doctor & was given an antibiotic although it didn't seem like I had a sinus infection and it really didn't make much difference. I stopped using the machine 3 days ago & still have the headaches. Has anyone else had an experience like this ?

CPAP and headaches

Thanks very much for your message becasue your symptoms sound similar to mine, headaches not severe and seem to be in different places alot of the time. For years I took Claritin or a generic and am wondering if I go back to that if the headaches will go away. I have recently stopped taking the claritin and recently developed the headaches, so I will give it a try.

After discontinuing use of the machine for 2 weeks the headaches stopped and have not reoccurred. I have used the machine on and off since but am now having lung / breathing problems. I'm beginning to think the machine just isn't workable for some people !!

Amazing I just joined this group to ask the same questions regarding headaches and sinus problems. I also have some unbalanced feelings. Headaches are the exact same as described. Been on cpap for about 3 months headaches developed about 4 weeks after starting. Are behind eyes, under eyes, on temples, and across top of head. Seem to move beween these locations. But a dull ache is always behind check bones under eyes. MD just changed the mask well see if it helps but I am not sure I can deal with the headaches and especially the dizzyness. I feel like im on the verge of an anxiety attack from the headaches but stopping would mean more problems....What a choice!!!

Headaches

Postby Oggie » Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:32 pm

Hi.

My thought is that it might be more the mask rather than the machine. My head is very sensitive to anything on it, sometimes hats give me heachaches, and headbands always give me headaches. I don't know what kind of mask you use, but is it possible the location/tightness/position of the straps from the mask are causing your headaches?

Hope this helps.

Rhonda, Hang in there. After discontinuing use of the machine for a week or so the headaches went away. My doctor had the pressure reduced from 15 to 12 and the problem did not reoccurr. Unfortunately, I'm now having new problems but I'll work through that too. Bottom line is that when I was / am using the machine I sleeping better and have a lot more energy.

I also have been getting headaches. Just as everyone else here describes. My sinuses, top of my head, my temples, back of my head. It just kind of moves around. It is mostly a dull headache. Sometimes it is worse, sometimes it completely disappears. Mine started about two weeks after I started using my machine. My air pressure is set for 16. Maybe it is too high. I also have been to my family physician who prescribed some allergy meds, but I wasn't exhibiting any allergy symptoms. AND, I still have the headaches. I have a Drs. appt. next week with my sleep DR. I am going to talk to him about it. I am just glad that I am not the only person suffering from this. I was beginning to feel like I was the only person who was having this problem.

I have been using my CPAP since November 2012. The headaches just started in the last two weeks. I'm glad to know that there are others that are experiencing the same things. The machine has saved my life and I will just work through this with my doctor. Thanks for posting.
