Here's a blast from the past; I used to have a Coleco Vision. Alas, that broke after they went out of business. I still have my Atari 5200, mint condition with optional trackball, still with the original box. The games I have for it are Defender, Missile Command, Pac Man, Star Trek, Star Raiders, and a couple of more I can't recall.
Wow...Atari. That brings back some memories. Ours had the joysticks and I was the queen of Space Invaders and Frogger.

I don't play many games on my PC. The problem here is that the technology changes so fast that keeping up can really be a money drainer. I haven't built or upgraded my PC since Jan. of 04. I was thinking about it this year but haven't decided whether I want to or not. One thing about buying one of the new next gen game consoles is that I can play most of the older games on them. I have noticed that all three (Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo) are making efforts to have older games play on their new console. A good selling point for all three consoles.
Has any one seen the commercial for the Wii? I have had a chance to watch them off the web site and have to say that Nintendo is doing a good job in the marketing area for the Wii. Their commercials are really different than the ones for PS3 and the 360.

I have almost the opposite problem, in that I don't game enough to justify buying a console that only plays games. I can justify upgrading my computer (though I might only do that once every 2-3 years) because I use it for other things as well as playing the occasional game. But I definitely see the point that if you're into buying the latest and greatest game when it comes out, the PC upgrade cycle for it can be a huge money pit. For the most part I tend to end up playing games that have been out for awhile, so I'm not sucked into that "gotta buy a new video card to play X that is coming out" thing.

I put in a Radeon x1300 pro 256mb. That's really about the best card I could find for my system. My motherboard is about 6 months older than the PCI express graphics interface, so I had to use an AGP card. I am looking to get a new system in the next year. The Radeon 1950 should do about anything you want it. They're big bucks here in Canada. I got the x1300 for $110 CDN though. I finished Doom 3 the other night. That final boss is pretty tough.

Thanks, Brian! I still have to finish Doom. I've seen the X1950 for anywhere between 210-240 USD on Pricewatch. That will likely be my next investment. Then I'll be set for a while. I usually build myself a new system every three years, give or take.

Will, I actually bought the Wii because it's fun more than anything else. I have to tell you that I think Nintendo got it right since they are doing very well with the Wii. Those new remotes are a ball to use and are not the problem people have been making them out to be. If what I see if used correctly they are great. I have a feeling most people don't take the time to strap them on correctly. My wife just loves the bowling game in Wii Sports CD. So it's been a good purchase.

I might take a look at the Wii, the more I hear about it the better it sounds. With the motion sensing stuff it could be a blast to play with the family.

I haven't owned a game machine since the 1980's and it was built by Matel. A young gentleman that worked for me who is heavily into gaming recommended the Wii to me. He has an XBox, XBox 360, Game Cube and now a Wii as well. He also has several computers which he plays games on. I asked him about the next gen console and what he would buy if he could only buy one and he said the Wii. His reason is that it is the most fun of all the game systems he has. I have to tell you I agree. If you can find some one who owns one try it out first. I recommend the bowling game in Wii Sports.

The Mattel Intellivision by chance? My parents got that for us Christmas 1980, I was 9 years old. I bought a used one last year even because I still had all my old game cartridges but the console had long since died. Alas, that one died about 3 weeks ago while I was playing Utopia with my 8 year old.

Sure was an Intellivison. Loved that game console. Graphics, by todays standard, a little blocky but what fun it was. They brought out the games on a CD. That had converted them to MacroMedia format and you can play them on yor Windows XP computer. I've got it around here some where. Was alot of fun to play those old games again.

Yeah, I've got the "Intellivision Lives" CD, but I just found that most of the games don't translate well without the funky controllers :) Sure, I can play simple ones like Astrosmash, but for the most part I just found it frustrating. I've seen a couple adapters out there to be able to hook up the Intellivision controllers to the PC through USB, but I haven't tried that route yet.
I was talking to my wife last night about the Wii, and I think we'll probably get one in the near future (after stores have them back in stock).

My cable company used to have an Intellevision subscription service. They gave you a memory box and you could download one game at a time and plug your Intellevision into it. This was about 25 years ago.

Those Intellivision games were a lot of fun. That was pretty neat to get them over your cable channel. I have to agree that playing them over the PC is not the same as on the game console. Those were the 80's is all I can say. Really surprised that Matel has not come back out into the gaming arena again. They had a good group of programmers and hardware at the time.
A friend of mine came by last weekend to show me the new digital SLR he had just bought. I of course had to show him my Wii. He called me up yesterday to tell me he had just gotten a Wii for his house. He has gotten to like boxing on the Wii Sports disk. Will have to go over to his place some time soon and play against him at his house.

I just bought a motorcycle racing game yesterday called Race to the Rally by Activision. You race through traffic on freeways and such, gathering "reputation" for wheelies, drifts, near misses and knocking other bikes down. As you gather 'reputation you get access to new bikes and modifications to your existing bikes. Kind of fun for us ice locked riders and a refreshing change from the shooters. The game is inexpensive and system requirements are pretty minimal for a 2006 release. By the way, the bikes are all Harleys. It's an official licensed product of the monolith...ooooops I mean Motor Company.

Well, I just finished Doom 3. That was one long game, but a lot of fun. I have the expansion pack already, but I might finish Quake 4 before I start that.
I did get a better video card; I picked up the Sapphire X1650. I'm happy with it, though I was a bit taken aback the first time I started Doom. The fan on that card is a bit noisy when it speeds up.
