I just got back from a trip to far southern Illinois to pick up a tent camper for the Valkyrie. We just missed seeing 4 inches of rain in 2 hours at Carbondale. Water standing everywhere. I spent Monday night in the camper at Champaign and woke to 100% humidity and 87 degrees. It helped me to remember why I restrict my summer camping to north of the 42nd parallel. Preferably far north!

I'd be happy if I could take a couple weeks off and not have to worry about what I spend.

John and Timmi are a couple that my wife and me ride with. We usually take a week and take off to some motorcycle event some where and have a great time on the road. So here is our ride for this year. John and Timmi have a 2003 Harley Davidson Road King that is really sharp. John has spent a lot of time on.
Just finished making the annual run with John, Timmi and Dee on our bikes. Dee and me pulled out at 8:20AM on the 5th of July. We stopped and picked up John and Timmi and headed to highway 101. Picked up 101 south in Astoria OR to begin our journey. We spent our first night in Coos Bay OR. Nice stop as there is a great Mongolian Grill and John and my wife Dee love Mongolian. Before we left on the 6th John got to go over to the local Harley Davidson dealer and pick up some shirts. I needed to stop at the local Honda dealer as my Wing was giving me some starting problems. Turned out to be a starter switch going bad but not needing repairs yet.
We pushed out of Coos Bay on south 101 and on over into California. We found the highway 197 signs to ride along the Smith River. This is a short five-mile ride and was just beautiful. Hit highway 199 and cut back to Cave Junction in OR where the temperature just went way up. We had been enjoying 70 to 75 degree weather but when we hit 199 the temperature shot up to over 100. At Cave Junction we cut over to Happy Camp CA by going over what’s called Greyback Pass. Rather than take highway 96 into Happy Camp we decided to take the pass. We had been this way before and it was as always a simply gorgeous ride into Happy Camp.
We got into Happy Camp on the 6th at about 5:30PM and went to the registration area to pick up our shirts and pins for the run. We had already pre-registered for the run. Checked into the campgrounds where we had rented a couple of cabins for the run. By this time the temperature was going down and it was only about 95 when we got there. It was here Friday night I was going to find out that I had left my power cord for my sleep apnea machine in Coos Bay. A quick call to the motel we had stayed at confirmed that it was there.
Saturday the 7th we spent doing the run thing and had a great time. We did take a break when the temperature got up into the 90s to go the local swimming hole at the campground we were staying at. Now you know why we stay there. Nice stream out back of the campgrounds is a great place to be during the hot part of the day. The run it self seems to be getting smaller. We had been here in 2005 and it had been a lot bigger. This is a real shame as Happy Camp is up in the Klamath Nation Park and the scenery here is just breath taking.
On Sunday the 8th we pulled out of Happy Camp on highway 96 west. The ride was as I said breath taking. Really enjoy the mountains as trees along the roadway. We picked up highway 299 north and headed off to Crescent City. The weather was still hot till we got to the coast and then we got back to the 70 to 80 degree weather that we had hoped for. We had switched from 299 to 101 at some point I just can’t remember the name of the town where we made the jump. We got into Crescent City at about 6PM and found a decent place to stay.
We left Crescent City on the 9th headed north on 101 for the trip home. We stopped in Coos Bay to pick up the power cord I had left behind and to have lunch. You can probably figure out where we had lunch at from the message. The weather here was 60 to 65 with a damp fog. Once in awhile we would hit some sun but not very much. We were bundled up as it was just plain cool and damp. No rain its just the fog was damp. When we got to Lincoln City we stopped for the night at the local casino. John and Timmi don’t gamble a lot as they prefer to spend their money on other things. I don’t gamble as I know what rotten luck I have in games of chance. Dee if she is in the mood does very well.
We stayed at the casino as the room rate are reasonable and the buffet did not disappoint us in the lest. We had a room with a great view of the Pacific ocean. The dinner and breakfast buffet were great. We left out of Lincoln City on July 10th for the last little leg of our trip. We stopped in Astoria OR for lunch and then dropped John and Timmi off at home while we rode down highway 30 to home. It was a great 6 days on the road and we all had a great time. Now starts the planning for next years ride.

Just tell him you need one of these. http://www.championsidecars.com/sidecars/showdetail.aspx?Sidecar=2
It allowed me to do a 1200 mile trip with my ten year old son 2 days after I had arthroscopic surgery on both knees. It hurt a bit, but not as much as telling him we couldn't go. He's 25 now and still talks about that trip.

 My "new" Camper.
I often talk about camping with the motorcycle. I picked up this little camper about 3 weeks ago and just got back from my third trip with it. This time my wife even agreed to go! I'll never go back to a tent. I put new in quotes, because it's a 1992 model, but it's new to us.
First one packed up to travel and second one setup for sleep.

Nice camper Mike! We almost bought a Timeout camper but decided on the Bushtec regular trailer instead. I wasn't sure how to take my CPAP along on a camping trip.
Our riding season has been hampered by rain and now heat. We did get a week long trip/ride down to Eureka Springs Arkansas on the goldwing and made it home before the flooding the next day. We're itching to get going again and are still wanting to do our northwest ride into Yellowstone. Maybe September.....

SideCarMike I have to agree that is a nice tent setup. One question is do you make sure you are near an electrical outlet or what do you do for power? I have thought about a camper trailer for my Wing just worried about running the CPAP machine.
forkliftbobby you don't need to quit riding. It was a battle for me last year to get used to CPAP and ride but I managed. This year it is even better. Harleys are good bikes, just to bad its not a Goldwing.
auntnene from your message it looks like you didn't make Wing Ding this year. I know when I started this thread a few of us were hoping to make it to Billings MT this year. I didn't have the vacation time so I went on a ride with my friend and his wife. The wife and me are talking about flying out to SC next year and renting a Goldwing while we are there. That way it is only a few days I would have to be gone. Right now we are just talking, I told the wife we need to make a decision by Jan. so we can make reservations and go.

.
I have one of those 18 amp hour "jump start" units that will run it for two nights. I just got back from the Wisconsin Moto Guzzi Rally where I knew I'd be for at least three, so I also put an AGM car battery in the camper. I ran all three nights off of it and never used the Jump start.
This has been a bad year for bike rallies. As dry as it has been around here, I've yet to makec a rally this summer that hasn't included at least one day of hard rain.

Thanks for the info Mike. I will keep this in mind it I do go after a camper. With my Wing I maybe able to figure out some way to recharge the battery while flying down the road. Who knows.
Sorry to hear about the tough weather this year for you. We have had a pretty decent summer for the most part. Course around here we usually have two to three days of rain a week any ways.

No, we didn't make it to Billings. Between the rain and the heat, we haven't done much. Took a week in June and went to Eureka Springs Arkansas. It was the only dry week in June and we had to cut it short because of a bad storm moving in. We were glad we did because the roads flooded between here and there. We have family in N. Carolina so we may go visit them and then ride down to Wing Ding in Greensboro. I'm ready for Fall to get here though so we can ride. These 100 degree temps don't make for a fun ride.

Auntnene Sorry to hear you did not make it to Billings this year. Hopefully you can make it to Greenville, SC this next year. The wife and me are going to be there. We have to fly out and rent a bike when we get there. Right now the only bike place that rents bike are Victory. I got to find a way to get my Wing there.
Our Chapter went and cruised with the old time car club last night in Longview, WA. Was a lot of fun. Course seeing all those cars was really the high point. Getting ready to head to Salmon, ID for labor day weekend. Any one else headed out and if so where.
