Post Sleeping less, is the the norm after being on CPAP?
Before my sleep study, i slept 9-10 hours a night and usually took a nap during the day.  I am not on CPAP after being diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnea and Severy Oxygen Deprivation.  AFter 70 nights on the machine, I am suddenly waking after about 6 hours and not going back to sleep.  I feel more rested than before CPAP.  Is this the norm?  Less sleep but more quality sleep????

Sherill,

We are all different in this regard, however I too noticed (some 10/11 years ago) that I required less sleep than pre CPAP. Even to this day 6/7 hours sleep are sufficient.

I think it comes down to the fact that you are now getting real quality sleep, with a proper sleep cycle in place. Hard to beat  Laughing

I too find that I am sleeping less and feeling better. I am in my third month now and am sleeping about six-seven hours nightly, no more daytime napping, and all in all feeling better. Have quit a lot of the thrashng around in the bed as well. Good luck!

I am definitely getting less sleep than before starting apap. I now awaken before the alarm goes off, whereas prior to treatment, the alarm would be going for some time before I even heard it, let alone rolled over and hit the snooze button (usually a couple of times).  Wink  Difficulty in getting started in the morning was one of my most severe symptoms of apnea, and now that that feeling is gone, I celebrate every morning as I hop out of bed!  Well, okay, maybe I don't hop, but I sure do get out of bed a lot quicker than I used to.  Very Happy I also used to take a nap almost every day, but haven't taken one in a couple of months now.  I guess it's the quality of sleep we are getting, rather than the quantity!  I am in my fourth month of treatment and it seems to be just getting better and better. After about seven months, I am in bed (or on the couch) less, sleeping more.

Prior to cpap, I would go to bed after the late news (used to watch Carson too), get up about 2 a.m. to urinate, get up about 5 to urinate, and hang around in be until the last minute so that I could shower, dress and get to work.  I also napped for about an hour at lunch, about an hour before dinner, and about an hour after dinner.

Early in cpap, the first week, while on vacation, had a 14 hour night, a 12 hour night, and two tens.  My average per night has been steadily declining for the past 2-3 months to about 7.5 hours per night.  I go to sleep about 10-10:30, and awaken, ready to go about 5:45-6:15 every morning.  I no longer nap unless I have a couple after a round of golf (I now walk the course).

I still feel like i'm in the early stages of c-pap as my hernia surgery set me back with sleep all together being uncomfortable and all.  I had surgery 5 days after getting my c-pap so there wasn't much time.

I do notice I don't require as much sleep and can actually get up on time to the alarm (maybe I can put the clock to actual now so that I don't feel like I'm oversleeping when it goes off 1/2 hour early).

I am definitely sleeping less hours at night;naps practically don't exist anymore. Another interesting point. I used to have to remake my bed every day because the sheets would totally be off;not so anymore since CPAP
