I'll join in. My Doctor told me that I needed to lose weight last July & find a different Job away from fast food. That before my diagnosis in Feb of this year.

How's everyone doing? I have been more or less treading water, work has been so busy with integrating (network, email, voice, etc.) a company we acquired, so I haven't gotten out walking much. I stepped on the scale at 176.5 this morning, which was kind of a relief since I was expecting 178 -lol-
I'm still not weighing myself, but I've added the exercise program my trainer gave me, to the treadmill, which I've been doing for about three weeks, now. It's amazing to me that I have the energy to do this, even after work. There's no way I'd exercise in the morning! lol but it feels good, like I'm really accomplishing something. I'm even feeling like maybe I can face a scale soon. Maybe.
I'm going back to the surgeon on September 10 for an adjustment ("fill") on my lap band, and then a checkup with my PCP on September 17. I should see some more progress by then---I hope!

Having started my CPAP machine treatment on the 16th of August, I also started my diet. Only my second diet ever. I figured with treatment my body would finally let go of the fat, and let me lose weight again. My beginning weight was 235 pounds.
I use the Atkins diet, which is not all meat like some figure. There is a lot of misinformation spread by a controversy-loving media, so I'll relay some info on it. I eat a LOT of salad, and veggies topped off with fat and meat to satisfy the hunger. I eat no more protein than I did before Atkins. If there is a difference beyond severely restricting carbs, it's that lean meat is out. Eating fat will kill hunger for quite a long time, which is why you can cut the calories so easily. Full fat, low sugar dressings like Blue Cheese, Italian, or Vinegar and Oil on the salad are a "go", and mayonnaise, or avocado on a bunless burger is a big help. I have a hard time finishing an ordinary single-level 1/3rd pound cheeseburger patty (with rabbit food) with even a minor amount of mayo on it.
As of today I am down to 223 pounds (lost 12 pounds, or 5% of my body weight so far). There is a lot of stored sugar in the muscles bound to an equal amount of water. As the sugar is used up, so goes the water, so I lose a lot at the beginning. Lost 16 pounds in the first two weeks last time, so not as great a drop this time, but so far so good. Oh.. drinking lots and lots of water is essential so I am always fully hydrated, and the weight loss from now on is all fat.
So far I had one day I went off the diet because I didn't eat at home and went to one of the international basketball games that are being played here in Las Vegas. USA vs. Venezuela if I recall correctly. All they had to eat at any of the vendors was fat and carbs fried in oil (mozzarella sticks), or pizza... well, they had a Subway, but the line was down around the block, so I ate pizza and went back on the next day.
I am faced with candy dishes loaded with chocolate at every stop I make at work. I have had to chastise myself for unconsciously grabbing pieces of my favorites and opening them and almost taking a bite before gaining my senses. Luckily, there are some places that offer sugar free candy, which I do not overdo. It's not easy in the modern world to stick to this diet since everywhere there are carbs galore that taste fantastic right in your face, but I hope to have the willpower like last time to stick to it all the way and not fall off the wagon after 6 months.
Wish me luck!
John

You go John!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The water statement is so very true in my case. I'm a very smart girl and if I could just make better food choices or even just get down 64 ounces of water/day (bottled;my dog doesn't even get Vegas water ) it would jump start me. But... the letters have been sent to Cigna and hoping to have laporscopic gastric bypass by end of year. Was able to quit smoking 2 years ago and never looked back but food has been MY nemesis for MANY years.

BARBCRN congratulations on quitting smoking! I've been on my mom for years to quit and she just gives me excuse after excuse. Weight was certainly one of them! Well I am officially down 8 pounds! My pants require a belt . The funny thing is-I really haven't worked out in a while and this is has been the most weight I have lost so far. I have been a little lazy I admit and I know I can't keep up my good fortune without sweating a little.
John keep up your hard work and surely you'll achieve results. And Lori, I think you are very brave!
I have the worst allergy symptoms right now, and haven't been using my machine the last few nights. Wow, I feel miserable.
Have a good week and keep on keeping on!

Goodness....losing weight, quitting smoking....you guys are awsome!
Update from me....still the same weight. Still to exhausted to work out in the morning. Nights are too busy. Still working at the school until 6-7:00 at nigt. I get there around 7:15 a.m.
I am taking an Italian class two nights a week. I am either too busy or too tired to work at exercise.
I feel if I could get my AHIs under 5 then I could do much better. Mine are around 35 or so.
I have learned NOT to exercise at night! Big mistake. It kept me up until past midnight! Won't make that mistake again!!! Was exhausted more than usual the next day at school.
Can't have that! You guys know that 4th graders take no prisoners! Can't fall asleep in front of them. I might wake up tied to the chair or my face painted like a clown. No really I have a sweet group of kids that are wonderful. They would probably just let me sleep and stay quiet so they wouldn't wake me up!
So...no weight loss, but no gain either!
John I like Atkins too but I cannot stay on it. There are carbs looking for me everywhere I go!

John, I hope Atkins works better for you than it did for me. I tried it 7-8 years ago I guess. I lost 18 lbs in the first month, but I also sent my cholesterol skyrocketing and did a big number on my digestive system. I felt miserable most of the time, so even though I was losing weight I couldn't stay with that diet.
Peke, how is your day structured? Do you get a break where you can walk around the building for 20-30 minutes? I know what you mean about not having the time or energy to exercise in the morning or evening. If I wasn't exercising during my lunch break I probably wouldn't do it.
A teacher's day is crazy. I have 30 minutes for lunch, but by the time my kids get restroom breaks and wash their hands, I lose 5 minutes of it. We also lose 5 more minutes walking them to the cafeteria. So I have about 20 minutes to eat, go to the restroom (for the 1st time I might add!) then meet the kids at the playground. I guess you probably have already figured out that I don't drink much water during the day! No time for bathroom breaks and can't leave the kids alone in the classroom!
I also switched buildings and grades this year so I am unpacking still. I eat plain salad every day at lunch and a carb free shake for breakfast. I can do Atkins if I could just let go of bread! Sometimes I think I could take down a wildebeast for a slice of bread! I love bread.
oh well, there is always next week....
Peke

MMMM bread... My weakness too Peke. That and chocolate. Did you ever get your auto bipap? Would that help with your AHI's?
Have a good long weekend ya'll!

No I still have my old bi-pap. I did change doctors, but he just wants another sleep study! He has already decided to test me on a bi-pap with a timed rate. ST is what I think the machine is called. Funny how he has diagnosed without a sleep study! Is the sleep study necessary!!!!!
Anyway, between my husband and I, we have paid for 4 sleep studies this year. I really do not want to pay another $300.00 next week. I am going to try to get him to do without one.
Will let you know later,
Thanks,
Peke

This is how a stomach looks with the lap band in place, which I had done on March 22.
---------------------------
LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System
Laparoscopic gastric banding has been widely used in Europe and Australia since 1993. Since its 2001 United States Food and Drug Administration approval, the LAP-BAND® System has been the only laparoscopic banding procedure performed in the U.S.
How the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band Works
The device is made of a silicone elastomer that has been proven to be safe. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band is connected to an access port below the skin surface allowing the surgeon to adjust the size of the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band in order to meet individual patient weight loss needs. This impacts the amount and consumption rate of food. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food.
The goal rate of weight loss is 1-3 pounds per week. Adjustments to the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band, which are performed during simple outpatient visits, are determined by the patient’s weight loss, the amount of food that can be comfortably eaten, the exercise regimen, and other issues surrounding the patient’s health.
The Least Traumatic of Weight Loss Surgeries
Since there is no cutting, stapling, or intestinal rerouting involved with the LAP-BAND® System procedure, it is considered the least traumatic of all weight loss surgeries. Five or six tiny incisions are made in order to implant the device.
By avoiding the large incision of open surgery, patients generally experience less pain and scarring. In addition, the hospital stay is shortened to usually less than 24 to 48 hours. Patients can typically resume normal activities within 1 week, which is quicker than with other surgical alternatives.
Because no permanent changes are made to the body, the procedure can essentially be reversed. If necessary, all of the LAP-BAND® System components can be removed from the body. The stomach will return to its original physiologic function once the LAP-BAND® System is removed.
LAP-BAND is a registered trademark of Allergan, Inc.
---------------------------------
I just had an adjustment today, and I was full just from a small dish of cottage cheese. LOL.
