Donating old CPAP?

Postby PerryA » Thu Apr 28, 2011 9:08 pm

Elsewhere the question was raised about what to do with your old CPAP when you are upgraded or you get a replacement.

About six years ago when I got a new machine, my doctor told me not to donate it and to keep it as a back up. Something that he said led me to believe there were restrictions on used medical equipment.

I have been at this long enough that I have a new machine (about two weeks), the prior machine, and the one before that (my first CPAP). So, I can have a back up and also donate a machine through proper channels so it gets some use. Anyone have experience with where and how to accomplish this?

Or, are there possibly different rules in different states? I imagine I'm not the only one in this situation and some of us would like to help others if we could. Anyone have knowledge or experience to contribute to the discussion?

Contact your local visiting nurse and hospice organizations. Check w/the local churches. Some sleep labs do some pro bono work on occasion, check w/some of them if they might know of someone in need. Be able to tell them brand and model of CPAP.
