Moisture on Mask ??

Postby woocrew2 » Fri Mar 04, 2011 5:23 pm

Question when I wake up in the morning my nasal mask has moisture around the lower rim (the part that sits just above the lips) its almost like sweat but im not sure has anyone had this issue or is this normal from the seal contacting the skin I have not had a problem with leaks. I am new to this only about four days now thanks.

It is probably just condensation on the outside of the mask (rather unusual) or condensation leaking from inside the mask (called "rainout").

Things to try for rainout:
1. a hose cover (purchase or make from tube socks or fleece)
2. lower your machine to a level below your head (not on the floor -- a small stool will be fine)
3. bring more of your hose under your covers.
4. turn down the humidity on your machine
5. raise the temp in your bedroom

It could also be very watery snot. Is your nose drippy when you first get moving in the morning?

Moisture in the mask is definitely rain-out. When it gets bad, then moisture is in the hose too. If it's not bothering you don't worry about it. If it IS bothering you, then see the suggestions above.

WooCrew2 I have it happen to me all the time. When humidity outside gets higher I have to shut off my humidifier completely. I run mine anywhere from none to full blast.

Occasionally I have rain-out so bad that I can pour several tablespoons full from my mask onto the bedroom floor! When it gets that bad the hose crackles and gurgles and sputters as well. I raise the mask in the air to allow the hose to drain back into the machine and then turn the humidity on my machine way down and I'm back to sleep in 30 seconds!

Rain-out is just one of those cpap things that you need to be aware of so that if it starts to be a problem you can begin to look for solutions without becomming concerned. Good luck!
