Excessive yawning?

Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and to sleep apnea as well...I was just officially diagnosed last week and brought my machine home yesterday evening. I had a good first night with it except for when it jumped off the nightstand at 3:30 AM. :shock: At any rate, I feel pretty good today but I noticed when I first woke up, I was yawning almost uncontrollably. I didn't feel all that tired, my body just kept yawning. It eventually went away and now I'm fine, but I was wondering if this was typical for a new user experience? Thanks!

I don't know if that's normal, and it's been awhile since I started using cpap and I don't remember.

But it could be logical. Yawning is mechanism to wake yourself up. Maybe for the first time in a long time you were sleeping normally, and your body liked it! So maybe your mind was saying, lets wake this puppy up before it becomes way too enjoyable!

But your question prompted me to look it up. I didn't look far, but I thought this wikipedia stuff looked interesting:

I found the first theory interesting, but mostly that it later was believed to be the opposite -- that yawning actually lowers oxygen levels. Don't know if that's true, but hey, maybe it's a reflex because now you have more oxygen in your system then you were used to, which means you're normal again! And then there are the other theories that were fun to read.





Congrats on a good first night. Keep that cpap on your stand! lol

Thanks for the welcomes. :-) Linda, I did check out that link and there were some interesting theories! I was always taught that one yawns to increase their oxygen level, but I think I had plenty of that last night. I like your first theory of the first restful night in a long time. And no worries, I went out after work this evening and bought the CPAP its own little table so there will be no more escape attempts! Thanks for all of your help.

I have had the fortune to work with a world leader in brain chemistry and spirituality. He and his partners have found that 10 minutes of continuous yawning (the first couple may be fake but real ones kick in fast) have the same effects on the brain as 40 minutes of meditation. Yawning increases your alertness and focus and relaxes you. It is not done to increase oxygenation. He is doing a study to see if using this simple yawning (oh here is one coming on) technique improves the test scores of college students.

My problem with yawning is not when I wake up but when I lie down to go to sleep. I have a nasal mask and it's difficult to yawn without opening my mouth. Cause, you know if I open my mouth air will go rushing out. All the yawning makes my ears clog up too. It's irritating. The RT suggested to turn the ramp down on my cpap. I did but still no yawning relief. Maybe I just need to go to bed earlier.

I have been on the CPAP for about a year now. I only notice that I yawn alot while on the phone at work ... I dont take calls alot with clients and I do have frequent converstations with co workers..but have noticed the tendancy to yawn more so while on the phone.....
