ResMed Elite II - odd AHI readout

Postby jammies » Fri Oct 17, 2008 12:30 pm

Finally. Got my ResMed Elite II with the daily LCD screen readout of AHIs which is what I was working so hard for.

Set the machine up. Tried it out. Held the mask to my face for about ten minutes, moving around in bed. No noticable leaks. Accessed the efficacy date. AHI 12.8. ????????? Why would it show 12.8 AHIs in 10 minutes? Are these readouts accurate?

Another question: since my last sinusitis attack (I get them fairly frequently), I have had noticed that the back of my throat gets really, really, really dry at night even when sleeping half sitting up and mouth closed. My first night on the CPAP (Flexifit 407 nasal mask), I woke up after two hours with very very dry throat. I know for the most part I was sleeping with my mouth closed.

A final question: The question above brings up another question. What is a reasonable leak measure? If I have a really high leak measure, that would mean I could be sleeping with my mouth open, right? (Okay two questions)

Thanks,
jammies

I have a similar question. Last night was my second night with the Resmed Elite II. This morning I had an AHI reading of about 15. The thing is, I spent like the first hour obsessively fiddling with the nasal pillow, stopping and starting, adjusting things, removing the mask, putting it back on ... etc. I'm wondering if that threw off the readings. I'm going to try to avoid all that tonight and see how it goes.

Okay, data collected whilst you are awake doesn't mean diddley-squat. We breathe definitely different when awake than when sleeping.

Sinus drip/drainage can cause a dry, irritated throat. Keep in mind you can easily adjust the humidity on the Elite's Humidaire 3i integrated humidifier easily just by turning the knob right or left.

Your Mask Selection on your Elite should be set to Standard w/the Flex-Fit 407. Your actual Leak rate will be 24 L/s or .4 L/M higher than the rate on the LCD screen. You have to look at the HC 407's literature to see what the allowed vent rate at your set pressure is and then compare that w/the reported Leak rate on the Elite's LCD screen and subtract or add as needed to learn your true Leak rate for the nite. The Resmed's automatically DEDUCT that 24 L/s or .4 L/M from the Leak rate they report when the Mask Selection is set at Standard. ALWAYS use the Standard Mask Selection when using a non-Resmed mask.

Usually if you open your mouth and attempt to breathe thru your mouth the noise and sensation will wake you up. HOWEVER, the more common source of mouth leaks is air gently escaping thru your lips, "the lip flutters" or leaks from the mask fit itself when you change positions in your sleep.

The fiddling w/your mask, stopping, starting and adjusting things during the night will also throw your data off. There is a Mask Fit option on your Elite. Hold the Start button down for 3-4 seconds and Mask Fit will come up. The number of stars indicates how good a fit you have but that's next to impossible to see yourself when you are laying down. HOWEVER, if you use the Mask Fit option you have about 5 minutes to fuss w/the mask fit before your Elite starts recording data.

Chronie Thank you. I will look into all of this. Right now this is all so new that it takes a great deal of time and effort. It takes me about ten minutes to get my mask on right, get my humidifier on, yada yada. Shoot, I'm still trying to figure out what goes on my night stand within reach and in what order to get ready for bed. Doncha love us newbies? I know this will get much better with use and time. The DME did not explain the mask fit star thing. I will do that tonight.

The first night, I only used the machine two hours before my throat got so dry I woke up choking. My AHI that night was 13 for two hours. Not much improvement when multiplied by four for eight hours of sleep.

The second night I wore the mask all night without a LOT of difficulty. Mask seems to leak when I lie on my side. I woke up a lot. My AHI was 13.8 for the roughly eight hour night. An improvement over mid thirties but not great.

I am assuming this will take time for me to adjust to the machine, fix leaks, not fuss, determine if I sleep with my mouth open, etc.

Thanks for your help. You have been a great source of help to me in all of this.

Hi Crohnie. I have a Resmed Pro M machine, do you know anything about the leak rate on those? Is it the same as on an Elite? Like jammies I'm also curious about my reported leak rate on the machine and am having no luck figuring out what the number on the screen means.

Interesting! I didn't know it had this feature. I am going to try that tonight!
