Post Alleries/congestion and seasonal sleep apnea?
My snoring and energy levels track my congestion from my allergies.  Is there any info on seasonal or periodic sleep apnea?

I just did the sleep study and felt worse after.  My throat felt like it had been sandblasted with the CPAC machine.  I don't want to just trade problems.  I am working with a new allergist who has perscribed Astalin nasel spray antihistiamine which has helped a lot but I was still stopping breathing for short times during the test.  I want to eliminate the congestion but am I fooling myself into thinking that it is all in my head (sinus/nasal congestion?)  I don't want to use a CPAC all year round if it is only allergy related.

Please advise.

Hi Stuffy,

You are not trading one for another, you are talking about two completely different issues involved with completely different parts of your anatomy.  Your allergies are affecting your sinuses, apnea occurs in the back of your throat, away from your sinuses.

Did your sleep study show that you have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?  If so, it is extremely important that it be treated.  Untreated obstructive sleep apnea increases your risk of heart attack and stroke, along with a host of other problems such as fatigue, headaches, weight gain, depression, car accidents, etc.

Decreasing your allergies will not fix apnea.  Clearing congestion in your sinuses will simply make it easier to breath with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).  We have lots of ideas for clearing up congestion when you get to that point.  But first, find out if you really have OSA and if so, get it treated.

Vicki

Hi Doug,

No such thing as seasonal or periodic sleep apnoea. You either have it or you haven't.

It appears that you have two separate problems, which require individual attention. Were you diagnosed with sleep apnoea after your test ? Were you prescribed cpap ? If so then its prescribed for all year round use. Sleep apnoea is not allergy related.

You should talk to your sleep doctor........ASAP.

Daniel.
