Post 'Anyone had a deviated septum repaired?
I was recently diagnosed with OSA and started CPAP & am feeling MUCH better, however, I am still sleeping on the couch, because hubby snores like a chainsaw.  He doesn't have the sleepiness during the day or falling asleep at the wheel, luckily.  Since his nose has been broken at least three times, I strongly suspect that he could have a deviated septum, and that could be causing or adding to his snoring problem.  Through some research on the internet, I see that there is septoplasty to fix the deviated septum, and I was wondering if anyone on this forum has had any experience with that surgery?  Plus, I found a company selling "nasal cones" and "nasal braces" which claimed to cure this, as well as cure OSA....needless to say I got a chuckle out of that one!  Laughing Anyway, please pass on any experiences or insight you have about deviated septum and its treatment.  Thanks!

Hi,

I didn't have the deviated septum (septoplasty) as it was not needed.

Over a few years I have spoken to numerous people who have had septoplasty and reports are very good. If he has sleep apnoea it will not cure it, but it clears out the blockage in the nose and allows a greater air flow.

As his nose has been broken a few times there is probably a lot of debris and grissle in the nose and the septoplasty would certainly clear it out and allow a greater ease of breathing.

If the snoring is really bad, might be worth having a sleep test. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness is only one of many symptoms of a sleep disorder. Other symptoms are not as easily recognised.

Personally, I'd stay away from the snake oil salesmen. The septoplasty certainly won't do any harm and probably will bring about a big improvement.

Kind regasrds,

Daniel.

I had the surgery for a deviated septum and cleaning out my sinus and opening up to opening in my nose. I am very grateful for my nose surgery. The surgery will help with using a cpap their wont be such a irritation in your nose from the pressure of the air from the machine. The way it is now the air hits the septum continually and causes irritation.
You wont regret getting the surgery at least I haven't regretted it.
Good Luck

I, too, had a septoplasty (among many other procedures--UPPP, trimming of my palate, tonsilectomy--UGH!).  The septoplasty alone is not a bad procedure at all--mine was a "closed" procedure (they operated through my nostrils vs. having to cut the skin under the nostrils and lifting the nose up).  It has helped significantly with my breathing.  The only bad thing I can recall about this procedure was the post-op appointments.  When the doctor cleans the incisions in the nose, it is extremely uncomfortable and painful.

But I definitely would have this done again.

Good luck!

Lisa

Had mine done (took 3Xs to get it right, Doctor- more like a hack) glad I had it done. Make sure that they check everything out first. One of the problems was my one terminus had grown to large on one side of my nose and ended up blocking that passage once septum was straight. would do it agian.

I too had a septoplasty done. I don't regret it for one minute. Mine was done in Germany a few years ago. I had minimum discomfort. The healing time seemed to go by quickly. I am now using a CPAP since about 5 months ago. I tell you there is nothing like a good night's rest. Very Happy  Very Happy

I had it done several years ago.  It had to be done again a few years later to completely untwist the septum.  I also had my turbinates reduced.  In the end, it has been great - well worth the discomfort.  It is nice to breath!  HOWEVER, my snoring did not significantly improve, which is how I ended up on the hose

I was told a few years ago that I had a deviated septum since i freel that my left nostril feels always clogged.

I went to an ENT and he explained the proceedure and scared me too much.  He stated that they would remove the bone in the septum, reshape it and replace it in the nose.  Then my nose would be packed for a week.   I would probably need to be on some serious medice for that to prevent an anxiety attack from not being able to breathe through my nose for a week.

I have considered going to another ENT again but unsure.

Post repair of deviated septum
I  just had my septum repaired and my turbinates reduced three days ago. I have very little pain and not much bleeding. My problem is being able to sleep. because I am so congested and my mouth and throat gets so dry. I can only hope it will get better soon. Since my sleep apnea is mild we are hoping this procedure will take care of it and the snoring. After reading this forum I can't wait to get htose splints removed!
