I was recently diagnosed with OSA and started CPAP & am feeling MUCH better, however, I am still sleeping on the couch, because hubby snores like a chainsaw. He doesn't have the sleepiness during the day or falling asleep at the wheel, luckily. Since his nose has been broken at least three times, I strongly suspect that he could have a deviated septum, and that could be causing or adding to his snoring problem. Through some research on the internet, I see that there is septoplasty to fix the deviated septum, and I was wondering if anyone on this forum has had any experience with that surgery? Plus, I found a company selling "nasal cones" and "nasal braces" which claimed to cure this, as well as cure OSA....needless to say I got a chuckle out of that one!
Anyway, please pass on any experiences or insight you have about deviated septum and its treatment. Thanks!
Hi,
I didn't have the deviated septum (septoplasty) as it was not needed.
Over a few years I have spoken to numerous people who have had septoplasty and reports are very good. If he has sleep apnoea it will not cure it, but it clears out the blockage in the nose and allows a greater air flow.
As his nose has been broken a few times there is probably a lot of debris and grissle in the nose and the septoplasty would certainly clear it out and allow a greater ease of breathing.
If the snoring is really bad, might be worth having a sleep test. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness is only one of many symptoms of a sleep disorder. Other symptoms are not as easily recognised.
Personally, I'd stay away from the snake oil salesmen. The septoplasty certainly won't do any harm and probably will bring about a big improvement.
Kind regasrds,
Daniel.
