the machine came!  we got an auto adjusting one with c-flex.  they let him play with 6 or 7 masks and he chose the new mirage.  he loves the pillow formation much better, says the air doesn't blow in his eyes.  the machine is set for now at 5-10 and has spent most of the night at 9.  he started out having trouble with the headgear and being very cranky (despite being excited to get going).  after bribing him with a dollar a day (for the first 90 days) toward new nintendo games for having a happy spirit about adjustments in the middle of the night, his next three hour chunk of sleep went great!  he's been pulling it off every two to three hours but is happy to put it back on now!  worth it to me.  i'm surprised, i can hear each little adjustment in the machine even in my sleep (moved his bed by mine until we're in the clear and he's used to it).  so far, so good, a huge weight off my shoulders!
