Post CPAP machine / storm question
Hi,
I have been using my CPAP machine for two months now and the difference in my rest has been amazing. I have a question though and I hope it doesnt sound rediculous.
Should I have any concerns using my machine during electrical storms?
Its something I began to wonder about a week ago after being woken up by a rather violent storm. I began to think about some apliances I lost a few years back due to a  lightning strike. My CPAP machine is plugged in as they were, and this has a humidifier with water in it and its on my face...  Im sure there is not an issue but I thought I would check anyway.  Has anyone ever asked this question before?    Thanks!

I wouldn't be concerned about an electrical shock hazard, I would be concerned about power surge damage to the machine or the power going out.  A good surge protector or UPS with surge protector is a Very Good Idea.  A backup battery is also a good idea.

its an important question as lightening strikes do happen, a cousin had her TV< computer, etc fried when lightening hit her TV antenna
I suggest you ask around locally about how to protect against lightening getting into your wiring as we obviously need to use out CO
PAPs during storms, 'surge buster' type switches dont always stop lightening

A good quality surge protector or UPS is usually sufficient.

If you live in an area that has frequent lightning strikes that cause power surges, an electrician can put surge protectors in your circuit breaker box to protect your entire house from power surges.  If you want to be totally protected from power surges; you can operate your CPAP from a battery, charging the battery during the day with the CPAP disconnected from the battery.

Yes, get a whole house surge protector; we have one.  You will have to pay for an electrician and the equipment but it's worth it.

Whole house surge protectors...there are cheap ones...$40 to $50 and there are good ones $400 or so.  The cheap ones take a hit and are not as effective after that.  I know here in Florida...Lightening capital of the US...the power company can set you up with surge devices on the property...for a monthly fee.  They also have a surge protection insurance type plan.  If you are thinking of doing a whole house surge protection...I would call the power company and see what they recommend or have available.

Surge suppressors won't do a thing against a direct strike, but thankfully strikes that severe are rare.  Whole house lightning arrestors (available from your power company) are the most reliable protection, but even they aren't foolproof.

As far as safety goes, I wouldn't worry too much about a CPAP hose and mask since there's no direct conductive path from the machine to you.  If it really worries you, get a UPS and connect your machine to it.  Unplug it from AC when there's a storm nearby, then plug it back in once the storm has passed.
