Hi, Twilight,
Why do you use tap water?  Won't the mineral buildup from tap water hurt your humidifier?  I get distilled water for fifty cents a gallon--not too great a price, but it isn't breaking me, either.  I clean my humidifier every day with either dishwashing detergent or vinegar, and sometimes with both.  My biggest breakthrough was getting a 2nd humidifier, so I could always have an air-dried one fresh and ready to go.  Good luck!

You should really use distilled water in your humidifier.  That will go a long way towards keeping it clean and bacteria free.  Once a week, clean it with hot soapy water.  Once a month, soak it in vinegar for about half an hour.  Rinse well and dry.  My DME gave me a sheet with cleaning instructions.  Look in your paperwork, I'll bet you have one too.

I used a highly purified home delivered bottled water. I just empty the humidifier each morning and let it air dry. Once or twice a week I'll run it through the dishwasher. If I didn't have purified water, I would buy distilled water.

We were told by the RT to use Listerine as it kills bacteria and won't hurt the soft bladder inbetween the chambers.  I use Listerine on the bladder, vinegar to disolve any mineral deposits, and once a week or so a weak bleach solution to soak the hard plastic parts in. I run bleach through the hose, rinse and dry, and then use the blow dryer on low to dry parts. Any time a part is left out to air dry it should be at least partially covered so no dust particles settle on it.  We were using tap water as we have two kinds of filters and water softener, but recently switched to distilled water as it's easier.  Lin.
