Post Confused!@#$%^
I recently underwent a sleepstudy, because I am tired all the time, have edema in legs, also woke up about 7 times gasping for air.My pulmonologist told me that I have no signs of apnea but during REM sleep my o2 level dropped to 84,I have done a PFT test, lung function is great. I have allergies, but based on PFT, I do not have COPD,ASTHMA, or EMPHYSEMA. PFT showed restrictive airway. Doctor put me on advair inhalor, Singulair 10 mg.,allegra D 12 hr. 1 pill a day, and Lunesta. Told me to come back in 3 weeks for followup on meds.,at which time he will send me home with a oxygen saturation finger test to wear overnight. He feels allergies are causing my airway to restrict. Has anyone heard of this? or have same or similiar situation?

Thanks,

yes, i believe he is correct; if you had already an asthma test, oxymetry, sleep test, etc, and he got into the conclusion that you did not have sleep apnea, that should be the case; the swollen of the airways could produce a low saturation of oxygen, since not enough air is reaching the lungs; it is good that you are on singulair, it has helped me a lot, i was diagnosed with asthma and have some heart valve problems and i take singular everyday; i could not tolerate advair because my heart started beating very fast, called tachycardias, then, i am only on singulair; it is correct that he sent you to check your oxygen levels at night to see if while taking the above medicines your oxygen level still drops;  the edema in your legs is something also that you should take care of, it might be that a kidney is not working well, or maybe other associated lung or heart problems; did you ask him about that? if you haven't it is good to ask or to see a cardiologist, you might need water pills to get rid of this edema, but, the most important thing about it is to know the CAUSE OF IT. Take care and best regards.
