Post How could this be done?
Ive been thinking about it  and I am wondering something. How could the medical establishment be forced to formally include sleep medicine training for all of the following fields:

1) psychiatry
2) Family medicine
3) Internal medicine (Internists)
4) Neurology

I ASSume OSA training is already being factored into pulmonary specialist training, but I am assuming that.

I think its very important to have all primary care doctors and all psychiatrists trained in sleep medicine, as these doctors probably encounter more people with OSA than specialists of other types.

Some kind of lobbying? Public interest law? Mediation/arbitration of some sort? Threatening to do class action lawsuits?

Like, how would non doctors go about forcing the medical profession to revamp some of its basic training?

Fred

I see where you are coming from, and from that viewpoint, I could agree.

But, at the same time, being a surgical technologist, I have troubles keeping abreast of just my main specialty area, much less the 12 or more other specialties of surgery that we work with. There is a host of information that must be learned already, that they can't spend too much time on too many things, or they couldn't cover all of the subject matter they need to cover.

I am noticing, at least in this medical community, that there are more doctors who have a better understanding of sleep apnea, its signs/symptoms, its diagnosis (polysomnogram) and its treatment options.

We just need to keep getting the word out!
