Several family members have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have the symptoms and would like to be tested. How much does a sleep study run. I live in south Louisiana.

Do you have health insurance?  If so it will cost much less than you think...perhaps nothing.  My sleep lab put $3,727.15 as the price on the insurance claim.  My insurance company said $900 was the "allowed amount" and the Sleep Lab accepted it as payment in full.  $0 out of pocket for me.

If you are self-paying however, you will need to negotiate with the sleep center as all the pricing changes to more realistic numbers.  Many will lower their rates for those in financial need or without insurance.

No I do not have insurance. I have been able to negotiate with other doctors for treatment and have been successful. I just wanted to know what others paid to get an idea of what to expect and how to prepare to negotiate. Thanks.

I really think it is going to depend on wwhere you go!  I went to Stanford and was billed over $18,000 for two sleep studies and the bills are still coming in.  Thankfully I have dual coverage insurance and have owed nothing so far (knock on wood).

Do you know some local friends that have "good" insurance coverage -- maybe Blue Cross or similar that are widely used and well known?  If so, ask them to look up sleep specialists and sleep labs in your area for who is in-network, and find out for you what the in-network rate is for those doctors and labs?  Then you'd know what they normally receive and could manage your negotiations from there.

I have asked around. Living in south Louisiana coverage is night and day. Most of the people have had great insurance. The great insurance goes with the oil field jobs. I have been insulin dependent since 1974. I can not get health coverage. This is new to me and I am at a loss where to turn. After my cousins were diagnosed, and explained to me their symtons-it made sense. I have been known to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Once when I was teaching school. I stretched out on the floor to draw an outline. My kids left for a 15 minutes recess break. When they returned, my paraprofessional had to wake me up! I frequently wake myself coughing. My ex-boyfriend used to say I sounded as if I was choking or coughing something up. He said it sounded scary, but I'd put my head back down and resume sleep. Maybe I was gasping for air? Anyway, I had never heard of this condition. It seems to me I may have sleep apnea. Thanks for your ideas!

Hello, I am an RT in IL. I would check around for someone that performs home sleep studies. If you have insurance I would go to a hospital base lab. A home study can save you a lot of money. If the study shows OSA you can have a Doctor order an Auto CPAP for titration or to find out what pressure you need. We also use Apnea-link from RESMED. It is a 2 channel home study unit that shows If you need a sleep study. We charge $20.00 for the study. A homecare DME in your area will have one. The homecare companies like to do them. Als o it will show If you need the more costly one. Take care
