Post Eucalyptus for a humidifier
Hello, as you can see this is my first post as I was just diagnosed with Apnea, which my nurse wife told me I had 4 years ago.  I don't like doctor's and did not want to see one about it, but that's all in the past.  Falling asleep at work is a worse than seeing a doc. Anyway, I got a call yesterday from the doc's office, advised my AHI score was 103 and o2 level was 64%.  Amazed I still living, anyway, first night on the CPAP and I woke up with heavy congestion in the nasal passage and had to remove for several hours to clear out the congestion.  I live in Florida and we already have high humidity and adding more to it seems a little weird to me, but I know breathing in cold wet air is also not going to be the answer.  Is there any way to add some eucalyptus or is there anything available to help keep the nasal passages clear.  I know my Mom always used Vick's Vapor Rub for a reason when I was a kid, so I thought just maybe with the CPAP.

Any news on this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hi,

Not a good idea to put any additives into the water chamber of your humidifier. Most humidifier manufacturers mention this in their leaflets. They base it on the fact that you should not be inhaling 'stuff' all night, particularly homeopathic oils which are not designed for this purpose.

There is no problem in using an inhaler or vicks prior to hooking up your cpap machine.

You don't have to use the humidifier, if you don't want. Just disconnect it.

Thanks. Yea, I tried it with and without the humidifier.  Now I know why they decided to add a humidifier.

Brian,

The humidifier is a big help in becoming compliant.

Best of luck.

Id be very doubtful about adding anything to the water but here in australia where eucalyptus trees grow wild, the oil is sometimes breathed in in low amounts as on hot days the trees sweat out the oil
