Post What do I do?
Hi all,

I have been struggling with sleep problems for a long time. My wife says I snore enough to raise the dead and then make them deaf! I sleep way to much its scary. On the weekends, I will probably get somewhere around 16 hours of sleep, and more if my wife would let me. I have short term memory problems, fatigue problems and especially oversleeping problems. I guess its really no question, but could sleep apnea make a person sleep for hours on end? And also, what kind of cost is associated with treatment? I can't imagine its cheap. Please, someone, help!

Hi,

Sleep Apnoea may or may not contribute to oversleeping, but consider if you are getting insufficient quality and restful sleep there is a good chance that you might not want to get up in the morning.

Short term memory problems are particularly worrying as it indicates a lack of oxygen getting to the brain, which is not good. Both that  along with the snoring and fatigue problems are typical symptoms of Sleep Apnoea.

As regards cost, what value do you put on your life ? If you have Sleep Apnoea it can be a life threatening disorder. If you are suffering from fatigue, you are a danger to road users (if you drive), your work mates and family. You may also have related cardiac problems which are exacerbated by untreated Sleep Apnoea.

I think that you should focus on the possible damage this condition may be doing to your general health and have it seen to. The great thing about it is that it is completely treatable with non invasive therapy which is ongoing in the comfort of your own home.

You are describing exactly the way I felt before being diagnosed with sleep apnea.  On the home page of this site there is a FAQ link.  Take a look at that and that may help you out.  Your next step should be a visit to your doctor to tell him/her exactly what you posted here.  He/she should prescribe a sleep study.  As for costs - if you are insured, the sleep study is usually covered.  If not - there are some posts here about that very subject.  As for CPAP machine/humidifier/mask - it depends.  My insurance did not cover the cost for the CPAP/mask/humidifier so I paid $1250.00 out of my pocket for that.  I was fortunate that the DME (Durable Medical Equipment provider) allowed me to pay it out over 6 months.  There are some DME's that have a "rent to own" program.  Again, there are other posts in this forum about the same subject.

I know it sounds like a lot of money - but we are talking about your health here (and possibly your life).

Good luck!
