Post Just a question about sleep apnea
My father was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and he has told me that myself or my other two sisters will develop sleep apnea at the age of 30 if we don't watch our weight, etc. I am 22, I am losing weight and I don't snore. My other sisters are 19 and 12 and both are thin. I know that we may develop it but is it true that we will develop it at the age of 30? Can someone please help?????

People of all ages can develop sleep apnea, including children and the elderly.  For women, statistics show a greater rise in incidence around menopause. Incidence of apnea increases in both sexes with age and weight.  Pregnancy related apnea is also common. While weight gain is a factor for many people, thin people also have apnea.
Apnea does often run in families, most of my immediate family have OSA, so he is wise to educate you of the possibility.  If you are aware of the symptoms, you can seek diagnosis if they present for you.  Many of us suffer apnea for more than 10 years prior to diagnosis and treatment.
Glad you Dad is being treated, if he has any problems, send him to this website--

Hi,

I don't know where he got the age of 30 from. OSA can be hereditary..........this is being studied in Oxford University at present. Because of the history, it would do no harm to keep an eye on your general health.
